This paper analyses the relationship between studies on colonialism and historiography on fascism from the 1970s up to today. In particular, it focuses on how studies on colonialism have reflected on the specificity of Italian expansionism in the 1920s and 1930s, and how the results of this scholarship contributed to the knowledge and understanding of fascism. The relationship between the two strands of research has gone through different phases: first, the historiography of fascism provided categories for analysing expansionism during the fascist period; later, colonialism definitively emerged as an integral part of the history of Italy and therefore also of the history of fascism; as such, studies on expansionism have contributed to the understanding on the Ventennio. One hundred years after the march on Rome, studies on fascism seem to have integrated the colonial dimension within their analyses.
