The article aims to investigate the views of psychiatric practitioners regarding the history of their discipline and how it has changed over time. In particular, the article focuses on the time span from the 1960s, when in Italy the role of mental institutions began to be questioned, to the present day. The author analyzes the reasons why the history of psychiatry has often been simplified over the last decades and examines the current diversity of viewpoints of mental health workers of different generations. The author believes that only by acknowledging the complexity of this history can we understand its contradictions and arrive at a common interpretation.
Keywords: History, psychiatry, paradigm, asylums, Italian psychiatric reform, complexity.
