The recently published volumes on Pius XII in WWII by David I. Kertzer and Andrea Riccardi pose different kinds of questions: assertive in the case of Kertzer, challenging and stimulating in the case of Riccardi. Rather than on newly accessible information due to the opening of archival collection in March 2020, this review essay focuses on interpretative venues opened by this new documentation.
