The article briefly describes thephilosophy behind the activities carried out by the voluntary organisation “Associazione di Volontariato Riconoscere”. The author addresses the three key concepts that drive the main services of Riconoscere: welcoming/ joining, peer support, holistic approach. In particular, the author identifies mutual self-help groups as a possible important contribution to the rehabilitation of the subject in the mental health field. It is a co-constructed rehabilitation, based on a support that has a social nature, that differs from clinical and medicalized interventions. Through the warmth and the support of a group of peers, a newfound trust and hope can be found and seeds for a renewed narrative of oneself, and the other, are planted.
