The city of Prato (Italy) represents a multicultural urban context that has prompted the Public Mental Health Service to implement a series of organizational and operational changes to meet the needs of asylum seekers, refugees, economic migrants, their reunited families, and their descendants. Within this institutional setting, the author analyzes the implications of considering cultural and historical-political dimensions in clinical, psychotherapeutic, and community work with this user group, particularly with asylum seekers and refugees. Thus emerges the necessity to assess the increasing impact of border regimes on the management of transnational human movements and on the experience of those who undergo them. The various border mechanisms are increasingly tasked with a dual and ambiguous role: while some increasingly repel fleeing populations, others struggle to protect them and fos-ter their hopes.
Keywords: ethnopsychiatry, political violence, trauma, borders, refugees.
