This essay aims to provide an overview of the presence of seafarers within institutions responsible for the care and custody of the mentally ill in Genoa. In particular, the two institutions under investigation are the Ospedale degli incurabili and, above all, the provincial asylum of Abrara, better known as the Galata Street asylum. The time frame examined is the fifty-year period between the unification of Italy in 1861 and the definitive closure of the provincial asylum in 1912, a crucial period from the perspective of seafarers, characterized by the general tendency to intern deviants in the coincidence with the transition from sailing to steam navigation.
Keywords: Genoa, asylum, seafarers, alcoholism, healthcare.
