The history of the Christians of Mesopotamia and Kurdistan before and after the First World War recounts the travails of all those communities cut off from the political designs of both the European chancelleries and the new regional nationalist leaderships. Through the analysis of their micro-history, the paper reconsiders the consequences of the imposition of new borders and spheres of power in territories characterised by complex cultural, religious and communal matrices. An analysis of the intrigues, misunderstandings and differing visions of their political futures in the region can help shed light on the controversial process of integrating these liminal communities and territories into the modern Iraqi political synthesis. Keywords: Christians of Iraq, liminal spaces, Middle East, Chaldeans, Assyrians, statebuilding process.
