In the forty years following the end of WW2, dock workers constituted an important body of membership for the Communist party and Italian trade union Cgil. As such, dock workers have featured in studies on the workers’ movement. However, dock workers positioned themselves at the crossroads of various dynamics: between the proletariat and lobbyist groups; between corporate practices and modern work organization; and, fi nally, between the private and public sectors. This article contends that studies on Italian dock workers in the Republican age have not addressed three fundamental questions. Firstly, the deep changes in working practices brought about by late-20th-century reforms. Secondly, the role played by the workers in shaping the economic development of the Italian port system since the end of WW2. Thirdly, the similarities and differences that emerge when comparing with other case studies across Western nations.
