This article considers the geopolitical implications and disputes between Italy and Tunisia that followed the symbolic and normative construction of the maritime boundary in Republican Italy. In particular, it focuses on the border across the Strait of Sicily, between the 1960s and the 1990s. This study provides a preliminary overview of the state of the debate in history and other disciplines concerning maritime confl icts and fi shing in the Mediterranean.
