The essay aims to analyse the link developed between Elio Veltri’s Pavia and the French socialists during the 1970s. Firstly, it provides a brief description of the innovations introduced by the Pavia council in terms of town planning and popular participation (new town plan, Comitati di quartiere and self-management elements), and then it examines the interest aroused by these initiatives, both nationally and internationally. Afterward, it illustrates the relationship established in Pavia between the French and the Italian socialists, dwelling mainly on the motivations and the evolution of both the French socialists’ interest in Pavia and the equally passionate regard of the mayor and the Italian socialist left-wing for the theoretical-political production of the French Socialist Party. The plongée dans le local offered by the bond established in Pavia, capable of focusing on the relationship between the representatives of the two socialist parties by linking it to the dimension of a specific territory, allows to insert another small but original piece into the broader history of their complex relationship.
Keywords: Pavia, Elio Veltri, Italian Socialist Party, French Socialist Party, self-management, urban planning.
