In a context characterized by structural violence, social inequalities and economies of suffering, symptoms determined by conditions of labor exploitation are understood here as paradigmatic clues allowing to reveal otherwise invisible states of suffering and demonstrate the traumatic reality of a collective history. These symptoms – at once individual, social, and political – can offer pathways of recognition, resistance, and healing, if the latter dimensions are joined in the construction of a critical discourse on pathologies, society, and praxis. This perspective is nourished by the international debate of medical anthropology, workers’ inquiries and experiences of self-organization and non-delegation in the prevention of risk and harm in the workplace that developed in Italy in the 1960s and 1970s, and, above all, by a collective process of trade union struggle and workers’ inquiry that began in 2023 in two factories of the meat sector of Modena.
Keywords: symptoms; health; work; union; workers’ inquiry.
