The transformations of the Sacco Valley are examined through the lens of territorial marginality, highlighting how urbanization processes increasingly affect intermediate territories, beyond traditional center/periphery or urban/rural dichotomies. Rather than framing marginality as structural weakness, the text explores its generative potential in producing new spatial configurations. The Valley emerges as a paradigmatic case of “Italia di mezzo” (inbetweenItaly), where historical discontinuities, environmental dispossession, and new extractive logics tied to logistics and ecological transition intersect. Fragmented geographies and fluid spatial relations emerge, with infrastructures functioning as devices of territorial reconfiguration. The contribution advances a critical reading of these intermediate territories as stratified archives, calling for interpretive tools capable of capturing their socioecological complexity and their potential to activate nonpredetermined futures—beyond both a closed, ordered idea of the urban and a formless, undifferentiated continuum.

Keywords: inbetween Italy; marginality; expropriation
