The paper traces the evolution of Francesco Indovina’s thinking on the process of urbanization and the influence that knowledge of Iberian urban realities had on his research and his scientific output. Indovina’s frequent confrontations with colleagues in Spain and Portugal yielded insights on the interplay between urban expansion and territorial integration. These exchanges fostered the dissemination of his scholarly work on the sprawl in Catalonia and Spain, which was enthusiastically received and gave rise to an intense scientific debate.
