Building on Mark Ruffalo’s (2026) contribution on the psychoanalytic concept of “analytic third”, the relevance of his critique of the limited conceptual rigor and the tendency toward metaphorical, insufficiently formalized uses of the notions of thirdness and field is acknowledged. The commentary, however, distinguishes this critical level from a further step, in which these shortcomings risk being taken to justify an a priori dismissal of their theoretical legitimacy. A position is therefore proposed that aims to preserve an open dialogue between different psychoanalytic models, recognizing the legitimacy of multiple observational standpoints and their potential clinical relevance.
