Drawing on Lewis Carroll’s “Through the LookingGlass, and What Alice Found There”, this piece examines the methodological paradox inherent in ethnographic research, where the observation of alterity risks resulting in an ethnocentric projection of one’s own interpretative categories. The analysis of several characters from the lookingglass world, as expressions of alternative logics and cosmologies, suggests to the researcher the need for a posture critically aware of the limits of their own observation and judgment. Such an attitude is reflected in Ernesto de Martino’s critical ethnocentrism: a dual thematization of Self and Other, grounded in the awareness that every form of humanity represents merely one historical possibility among many others.
