Between 1957 and 1963, the Republic of San Marino underwent a crucial political transition marked by the consolidation of an anti-communist government, backed by both Italy and the United States. This article analyzes that process within the broader framework of the Cold War, highlighting the interplay between economic development and political repression. The new leadership implemented a containment strategy against dissent, combining expansionary economic policies with systematic judicial, administrative, and police purges. Drawing on primary sources from Sammarinese, Italian, and American archives, the article reconstructs a paradigmatic case of institutional anti-communism in a borderland space, where international pressure contributed to an authoritarian redefinition of the democratic order. This analysis recasts San Marino as a peripheral yet significant Cold War laboratory at the heart of Italy.
