Over the past two decades, Italian historiography on the Second World War has undergone significant revision. This review reconstructs the evolution of studies on the “war on civilians”. It describes the trajectory from the initial focus on Nazi-Fascist violence to the emergence of new areas of research — local memories, bombings, and Anglo-American occupation —, and finally to the problematization of civilian victims as an autonomous analytical category. A comparison with international historiography allows us to identify key debates, recent interpretations, and areas yet to be explored.
