This paper develops an analysis on the role that consumption choices aimed at rewarding socially responsible firms have in promoting workers’ well-being. First, by considering the notions of corporate social responsibility, ethical consumerism, consumer activism and voting with the wallet, we analyze the main channels and concepts that seem to connect consumption choices and responsible corporate behavior. Second, by discussing some empirical and experimental results, we consider the effect that consumers’ willingness to pay a premium for socially and environmentally sustainable products may have in affecting responsible behavior of firms. Particular attention is devoted to a contribution focusing on the role that responsible consumption choices may have in encouraging firms’ decision to pay higher wages to their workers.
