Aim of the article is shedding light on the “Anticouncil” which was held in Naples in conjunction with the start of the Vatican Council I and was organized by the radical Giuseppe Ricciardi with a twofold aim: to counter the interference of the Pope in the Italian politics and to constitute an International of Freethinkers. The relevance of the Anticouncil, which was dissolved by the police on the very second day, consisted in its great resonance in the media as well as in its transnational character;; along with the adhesion of prominent figures such as Garibaldi and Hugo, it was opposed by Mazzini and criticized by members both of the freethought movement and the freemasons. The Anticouncil can thus be seen as an experimental situation that discloses light on the ideological fractures within late XIXth century radicalism and anticlericalism, reflecting all the tension between the utopic vision of a social order based on reason and on a vague civic religion and the uncompromising stance of a paradoxical rigid new creed.
Keywords: Anticouncil, Vatican Council I, Giuseppe Ricciardi, Freethought, Anticlericalism, Secularization.
