This article deals with a brief reconstruction of the debate developed in the politicalinstitutional field, during the last years, on the future policy of economic, social and territorial cohesion, which the European Union will presumably start in 2014, namely after the conclusion of the current programming period. Like in previous occasions, while such policy is brought about, the competent Authorities debate on how to reform the next one, on the basis of both the conclusions of a series of documents, including a scientific report, and the results actually obtained in the use of financial resources allocated under the structural funds. In fact, despite the serious and worrying financial crisis currently underway in some EU’s Member States, the European Commission is expected to present in the autumn of this year the new legislative package on cohesion policy for 2014-2020.
