The present study aims to unravel the relationship between trade unionists and politics. We conducted a survey on around 1,500 trade unionists in Lombardia and Veneto, to investigate the way in which these subjects relate with politics, its culture, and with the trade union itself. Preliminary findings show that the majority of trade unionists is politically oriented toward a specific party (and in particular the right-center parties), although the level of trust toward the Parliament and political parties in general is low. Contrariwise, trust in trade unions, judiciary, and the President of the Republic is high. Concerning the role of trade unions, the individual representation and bargaining policies are prominent, while activities of analysis and planning secondary. We observed also a difference between opinions declared by trade unions officers and union representatives on the one hand, and people devoted to trade union services on the other. Therefore, it emerges the existence of two different cultures, that make the complex nature of the relationship between trade unions and politics even more complicated.
