The recent proposal of EU Directive that introduces a form of presumption of subordinate work of those who carry out their activities through IT platforms has re-engaged the debate on the riders’ activities and on the need for regulation for gig economy workers. This paper re-ports the main findings of a research which blends together the legal approach - focusing on the analysis of the main case law pronouncements and legislative interventions - and the so-ciological approach, carried out through empirical research addressed to riders working for the main food delivery platforms. According to the research findings, the interviewees’ resistance to the idea of a "forced subordination" is due to the "non-negotiable" nature of those identity values on which their job relies, which consist of a perfect "alchemy" between time and earn-ings. This call for a cultural change, needed to mark the shift from a "fear of changing" to a "concern about changing" approach.
