An analysis of two cases in the Levante ligure Despite the increasing interest in tourism issues from environmental historians, the spread of Mediterranean seaside tourism in the second half of the 20th Century and its impact on the environment has attracted little attention as of yet. With a view to fill such a research gap, this article investigates the environmental conflicts raised by the attempts to boost mass tourism in the Levante ligure, a coastal area in North-West Italy. It applies a twofold perspective, by analyzing both the material and the immaterial dimensions of environmental conflicts; moreover, the research traces the role played by different actors involved in the struggle for the protection/exploitation of natural heritage. The article takes into consideration recent achievements in environmental history and offers a multi-disciplinary perspective on the environmental outcomes of mass tourism along the Mediterranean coasts.
