Turin is a city hit hard by the storm of the economic crisis, and in the city, immigrants are in a particularly acute state of difficulty. The main part of this research is composed of a corpus of biographical interviews with unemployed men who originate outside the EU, which were conducted in the context of a Centro Territoriale Permanente per la formazione degli adulti (local center for adult education), where the author carried out an ethnographic study. This essay investigates the impact of the economic crisis on the careers of the respondents and as its effects broaden to every aspect of their lives, such as long-term unemployment, the risk of losing their legal status and their homes, the tensions within households and families, etc. Finally, this essay compares two categories of unemployed immigrants. First, those who have been settled in Italy for many years and had established families and housing in the city, which was then undermined by the crisis. Second, it includes unemployed young people recently settled in Turin who have recently emerged from undocumented legal status and who because of the economic crisis experience shrinking opportunities and prospects. In both cases, the economic crisis seems to exacerbate problems that have already been present for some time for immigrant such as difficult working conditions, legal insecurity and housing problems.
