The issue of work-life balance has obtained in the last years increasing visibility and legitimacy in the european social and organizational policy agenda, stimulating also in Italy the implementation of several initiatives and actions aimed to promote a better balance between work experience and other life domains, in particular the family. However, in discourses and practices about work-life balance more widespread in Italy we can find several ambiguities and paradoxes, and in particular the existence of gender subtests that seem to reproduce those same assumptions and stereotypes that they are expected to overcome. In this paper I intend to highlight the main ambivalences and critical issues of the work-life balance practices in Italian organizations and to single out some theoretical and operational insights in order to redefine them.
