This article examines some interesting points in the conceptual link between Nietzsche’s perspectivism and the thinking of Richard Rorty, placing in a relationship of mutual enlightenment both the variations of perspectivism they offer and the critical features which they conceal. The author also aims to show that Rorty does not present only affinities and links, but that he also develops and integrates ideas going back to Nietzsche in an original way from a personal and contemporary perspective. The article focuses in addition on the way in which Rorty customizes and expands the notion of contingency, the relationship between philosophy and narration as well as that between philosophy and literature, the centrality of language and the critique of the concept of Truth (replaced by Rorty with truth). On the epistemological and ontological front, he develops Nietzsche’s perspectivism, thereby managing to grasp even the truly perspective and contingent nature of perspectivism itself. The article then goes on to underline the particular force attributed to creation and redescription in the cognitive process and to the relation between reality and the ontological power of language in ontology. Finally, Rorty shows himself to be sometimes in conflict with Nietzsche; for example, on morality and politics he reaches a position of problematic double-dealing through the opposition he establishes between the public and private spheres.
Keywords: Rorty, Nietzsche, perspectivism, contingency, language, philosophy and literature, the public and private spheres.
