Environmental and economical evaluation of the conversion to natural gas of buses for public transport and MSW collection vehicles in the city of Brescia (Stefano Caserini, Paolo Seminati) - ABSTRACT: The work underlines the environmental and economical benefits due to the use of compressed natural gas (CNG) instead of diesel both in buses for public transport and in Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) collection vehicles running in the city of Brescia. The variations in atmospheric emissions of different pollutants and the economical aspects in terms of direct and indirect costs had been considered. Specific data regarding the two different fleets, along with their fuel consumption, the distance covered annually and literature data concerning the CNG emission factors had altogether allowed the assessment of the emissions for the two actual fleets of vehicles and thus the benefits from a complete conversion of their engines to a natural gas alimentation. Environmental benefits due to emission reductions had then been translated into monetary terms, basing the analysis on literature data concerning the external average costs related to each pollutant considered. In particular, the conversion of the actual urban buses and MSW vehicles into CNG vehicles brings to an 80 % reduction of PM and NOx emissions, along with a significant reduction of the overall external costs that urban transport and waste collection have on human health. Key words: Pollution Control Costs; Distributional Effects; Employment Effects; Air Pollution; Water Pollution; Noise; Hazardous Waste; Solid Waste; Recycling
