The study of caregivers burden is receiving increasing attention, es-pecially because many research studies highlight the possible conse-quences, in terms of mental and physical health, of a prolonged and intense involvement in assistance duties. Such studies, however, tend to focus on individual well-being or dyadic relationships between patients and caregivers, often overlooking the wider context of the whole family or social relationships. Relevant models in the systemic-relational literature can shed light on the wider picture of families facing chronic illness within any given society. Such models are also well-suited for providing a framework for bet-ter analyzing caregiving relationships and the many variables that dy-namically interact in the shaping of personal and relational well-being. Such an issue is extremely topical today, due to the relevant ep-idemiological changes of the last decades and to the increasing inter-est toward psychological interventions in hospital settings and primary care.
Keywords: Caregivers, family, illness, systems thinking, biopsychoso-cial model.
