The essay presents a brief history of the cultural and structural development of the Danish welfare state, starting from the once strong protestant ethic that underlies Danish culture and the high level of taxes needed to sustain the system of social protection. The essay presents the main processes of social change in Danish society - immigration, individualism, consumerism, the lessening of social capital and of protestant ethics - that are undermining the foundations of the overall welfare system.
