In our hedonistic-narcissistic contemporary society, suffering sounds as a taboo: on which terms does the ever more technological man confront suffering, death and happiness? The work aims at analyzing man’s socio-individual behaviour pointing out how the answers given in our highly secularized society characterized by affective neutrality where suffering and happiness have been replaced by more complex meanings, codes and spiritual categories prove ineffective. The author has interviewed 39 people living in Rome whose emotional dimension as individual conscience proves relevant to the study.

Keywords: Pain, suffering, death, happiness, affectivity, disease.
