Social work and clinical research show that domestic violence is more likely than usually expected in "normal" social contexts and families. This fact confirms the need for an overall perspective that explains prejudice and gender stereotypes in different periods and cultures. The author moves from Arendt’s reflections to highlight the adhesion to ethically inadmissible models that are however socially accepted as part of the prevailing culture without personal reflection. A social explanation is at the basis of stereotypes that can have a relevant role in conflicts and in particular in harassment within couples. Many studies in fact show that harassment is asymmetrical and as such is a different category from conflict. This therefore requires different theoretical and clinical tools that should be elaborated within a theory of complexity that keeps into account the different levels of abuse and provides tools for prevention in cooperation with other professional.
