The paper tackles the subject of gender-based violence from a lesser-known perspective, that is from within the health sector. It analyses the phenomenon of gender-based violence - which still today is "widespread and pervasive" - through a historical and sociological lens, revealing the origins of female subordination in patriarchy, and in the rules and asymmetry of power that discriminate against women in the public and private sectors. Both a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the phenomenon was carried out. We examined the human and social costs entailed, in addition to focusing on its significant impact on health. We also assessed the plausible causes and any possible solutions to the problem. Lastly, we looked at the gender-based approach in the health sector, in particular the "Codice Rosa" introduced in the Region of Tuscany. This "Pink Tag" is used in an advanced triage system for victims of abuse. The model implies a concrete integration of the social and health sectors and a multi-disciplinary interpretation.

Keywords: Health; medicine; gender; violence; family; patriarchy.
