From an analysis of self as a perceptival sensory-motor act (Perls et al., 1951), this paper traces the developmental approach of Ruella Frank (2005; 2011; 2015), specifically in her analysis of the six fundamental movements. Her perspective supports movement as the main regulator of relationships beginning in the early moments of life. The primary movement patterns that develop in the relationship between the child and the caregiver represent physiological and psychological support for the contact. They facilitate the initial formation of self-perception and the perception of others. The observation of the fundamental movements helps the therapist take an evolutionary perspective and build with the client a verbal and kinesthetic dialogue within the phenomenological field in therapy.
