Disposal of industrial buildings, following the recent economic crisis, imposes a reflection on tools and strategies useful to the architectural design to operate in such contexts. The essay establishes a critical distance compared to the season of disposal during the 1980s, a distance related to the scale and the conditions that characterize contemporary forms of industrial abandonment. A change of the point of view implies the reorganization of the design tools to intervene with different strategies. The paper proposes guidelines for possible operations able to act with processes of densification and demolition described through case studies. Overwriting, infilling, stratification are possible actions, able to retrieve abandoned artifacts, preserving, where possible, a productive activity albeit with different conditions.
