On 1st April 2015, the enforcement of the security measures consisting in the deprivation of liberty in a "judicial psychiatric hospital" (Ospedale psichiatrico giudiziario) and the admission to "care and custody home" (Casa di cura e custodia) was replaced by the recovery within the Residences for the implementation of safety measures (REMS), after a long legislative process. This essay is based on a field research carried out within the REMS of Pontecorvo (for women) and Ceccano (for men), both in the Lazio region. In particular, the biographical and legal cases of the patients were analysed through the study of their legal files and the interaction between the author, on the one side, and the director, as well as other operators of these structures, on the other side. Starting with these two experiences - Ceccano and Pontecorvo - some trends and characteristics can be highlighted, which emerge in the practice of deprivation of personal liberty at the REMS. The study adopts both a critical and a proactive approach, also in view of a possible contribution to the future implementation of the REMS system, firstly in other cities of the Lazio Region and, secondly, at the national level.
