The essay focuses on the crucial months of 1848 from Marco Minghetti’s point of view. Several very important documents, especially letters, lets to identify the perimeter of the young Bolognese politician: national question, constitutional institutions of the Papal State, finally security, public order. Minghetti reacts to the challenges to the politics of reformistic gradualism - producing accelerations, polarizations, radicalizations -, updating by turns the position of the liberal moderates. This does not succeed always: if in some cases synchronization seems to have successfully completed (as in transition from the Consulta to the Constitution), in others (see the end of 1848 in Rome, after Pius IX’s escape) liberals do not produce an effective narrative containing the democratization of Popular clubs, and stay prisoners of the ideological schematism of their culture juste milieu.
