Having defined the term public spaces in Western European culture, this paper illustrates the reasons that motivate the importance of intercultural dialogue and education for mutual tolerance in urban public spaces. The increasingly important role of the concept of mixité for the European urbanism project for the regeneration of public spaces is therefore highlighted. An urbanism project that must also address, in the context of the ongoing economic, environmental and social crisis, the problematic relationship between urbanism procedures and the scarcity of public economic resources. The paper, therefore, supports the urgency of a new European urbanism project, based on con- textualized experimentation and exploratory projects. The liveability of the future urban Europe must in fact be built starting from the regeneration of public spaces, contrasting social inequalities and opening the enclosures of socially and functionally homogeneous enclaves.
Keywords: public spaces, social mixité, urbanism project, European urban territory
