The article presents the Italian data of a transnational empirical research con-ducted on a sample of lone mothers through Institutional Ethnography, an alter-native and gendersensitive sociological approach. The research nalyses the discrepancies between the participants’ everyday reality and the discourses and practices of judicial institutions. The article highlights the practices of resistance that mothers put in place to challenge the uncertainty of their future and to seek social inclusion, while showing the potential of the approach used.
