University Prison Poles lend themselves, by their very nature, to be an interest-ing object of study, a laboratory of relationships, an opportunity for creative so-ciability and, of course, the (partially) external arm of academic training. The present contribution intends to focus on the two-year pandemic period 2020-2021, where students under double restriction and citizens were able to take part in Nel frattempo...un libro (In the meantime...a book), a choral project de-vised by the University of Florence's University Library System, which saw the par-ticipation of representatives from the world of culture, citizens and recluses. The project was accompanied in its realisation by a 'meta-reflection' stimulated through short interviews on the function of reading in prison and on the imagery of imprisonment.

Keywords: prison libraries, independent bookshops; public engagement; third mission; university penitentiary centers.
