Territorial and landscape sciences have benefited from complex systems studies, referring to various scientific fields before developing their strand. However, there are still contributions that have had less impact. One example is the work of the mathematician René Thom, which is used here to link the concept of aesthetics to landscape values and to provide an interpretation of the dynamic balances that characterise the enduring relationships between settled society and environmental cycles.

Keywords: complex systems; landscape aesthetics; structural stability; catastrophe theory; spatial structure.
