This paper presents some considerations about the connection between the settlement model of urban sprawl and the land use in Italy. The increase of low-density urban areas seems not to be connected to any demographic trend, and it is considered as the main responsible for land use in this country. Sociologically speaking, urban sprawl seems to be more and more distant from some typical aspects of the city, where a certain level of density and compactness is required.
