The author addresses the issue of alcohol consumption among teenagers and young adults, with specific reference to the family. Considering this phenomenon as "youth alcoholism" can cause confusion as well as excessive and unjustified alarm attitudes. The author proposes the term of "alcohol consumption among teenagers and young people" (underage drinking). The most recent data available on the consumption are presented and discussed, with specific reference to the modern vision of adolescence and the young adult phase. In this framework, the role of excessive and/or repeated alcohol consumption is discussed as well as, in addition to the short and medium term effects of alcohol consumption, relevant consequences on the family system are expected. At the same time, some risk behaviors are seen in the transition phase of the life cycle between late adolescence and youthness. An intervention that includes the involvement of the single parents is proposed and a clinical case is presented.
