The purpose of the essay is to conduct a comparative analysis on the impact of the kafalah on some European legal systems in the framework of the European area of freedom, security and justice, trying to single out some essential features shared in common by the differ-ent models of regulatory strategies. In particular, in the multi-level model of European regu-lation, kafalah has been addressed either from a national jurisdiction point of view (focusing on the legal recognition at Member State level), either from a European point of view, stressing some relevant fields of interplay: kafalah and right to family reunification; kafalah and European citizenship; kafalah and protection of fundamental rights.
