The Enciclopedia italiana was the most important creation of the fascist re-gime in the cultural field. The Enciclopedia obviously reported the versions of re-cent historical and political events preferred by the government. During the fascist regime, however, intellectuals did not always agree with those versions and in some cases the authors of the Treccani had to choose which interpretation to en-dorse. The scientific level of the entries referring to current events and recent his-tory is diverse: some of them make an effective synthesis, while others are more biased. The control of the government grew over the years and was particularly strict on the Appendice I, published in 1938. The article examines the entries of the Enciclopedia and its Appendice about politics and recent history, with the aim to investigate how the fascist regime influenced the authors’ work and analyze which elements of fascist ideology they highlighted. The article also looks into the methods they used to endorse the “official” narrative.
