Based on decades of clinical experience as a psychodynamic psychotherapist and developmental psychiatrist, the author describes the characteristics of prolonged social withdrawal in children aged 10 to 17. On the basis of two key concepts, nosophobia and the oblivion of recognition, he traces the developmental path of this serious pathology and the difficulties in diagnosing it. Furthermore, the author touches on the enormous treatment problems that this disorder brings and discusses some intervention modalities.

Keywords: nosophobia, oblivion of recognition, psychodynamic psychotherapy, treatment, pre-adolescence and adolescence.
