Food Quality and Safety in the Framework of Globalisation - The quality and safety of our food supplies is a matter of concern shared by many in the international community, regardless of income levels. Another concern closely related to this is that the current system of international relations and exchange in food and agriculture does not contribute sufficiently to rapid progress in the fight against hunger in the world. Given such a background, this contribution first addresses the appropriateness of the regulatory frameworks governing the international rules in agricultural trade and, secondly, the nature of the food quality and safety problems, and international efforts to alleviate them. Subsequently some ethical considerations are addressed that should lie behind these efforts. Finally, it deals with certain initiatives the Fao has undertaken in guiding the consensus-seeking process, and enhancing the developing countries’ capacity to gain access to sufficient and safe food.
