In the introduction the author discusses the thesis, put forward by Luigi Bonanate in an article published in the previous issue of this journal, which holds that the age of nationalism has been replaced by the age of universalism. Bovero then focuses on the case of Europe, which seems to be moving toward unity experiencing at the same time particularistic waves, considering various aspects and different interpretations of the idea of federalism. Holding once again the validity of universalism as normative model, in the last part he analyzes critically the current notions of community, nation, ethos, grooup and culture.
