An element somehow set aside in the reflection on modern despotism is the fact that, if every human being is "naturally" entitled to freedom, despotic relationships, axiologically speaking, have no future, in whatever area they may be nested, independently from the tactical use that can be suggested for them. This essay analyzes in depth the crucial role which not only and not mainly at the political level, but especially at the social level, despotic power keeps on playing on bodies and minds up to thinkers like Montesquieu, Rousseau and Condorcet, careful and "multidimensional" readers of ancient and modern forms of dominion.
