Acoustic synesthesia is an interdisciplinary domain of contemporary psychology. The present theoric work intends to analyze the most recent developments of researches and methods in two differents directions: a) the psychology and psycho-phisiology of perception and cognition, referring to the neuropsychological studies that allowed to analyze structural-anatomic and functional parameters (with TAC and PET) of intermodal perception. Compar-ing normal perception with synesthesic perception it shows differences about the acti-vated brain areas: we suppose the presence of two diffe- rent ways of coding for the two perceptions; b) the psychology of communication, with considerations about phonosymbolic characteristics of sound and its function as communicative system, considering results of some intercultural researches. Physiognomic and synesthesic properties of sound carry out important functions in the acquistion of representational an communicative skills, from the onto- and the filo-genetic perspectives, becoming a transitional phase for the development of more conventional communicative forms.
