Habermas’ latest series of philosophical essays deals with morality and politics. Among the themes discussed are bioethics, the relationship between religion and politics and the project of an international political constitution. Religion is the main theme. Habermas proposes a «third way» between doctrinaire lay thinking and a return to religious fundamentalism. Habermas believes that both sides can learn from one another; modern rationalism should accept its limits and recognise the role of religion in public life, while religions should accept the principles of tolerance and recognise the freedom of individual conscience. Habermas concludes that religion is not in opposition to the liberaldemocratic state but a positive constituent element of it. However, the public role of religion means the acceptance of the separation of law and ethics which is a cornerstone of modern democracy.
